Alive at Five!

This morning was our five- mile training run, and the first opportunity I had to actually run with my pace group. Meghan, my friend and inspiration for this endeavor (she did it last year and got me excited about it) was in town from San Diego for a BBQ I was having this afernoon, so she came along and said hello to some of the coaches and site organizers, she also took some pictures for me:

Pace Groups!

For the second time, I rose at 5am and drove out to Santa Monica to meet the group at 7am. Sadly, I was unable to participate in the group training today because of a minor surgery I underwent yesterday (to biopsy a breast lump). But I thought it was important to go to the training session anyway to hear any important announcements, plus I really liked the people I met last week and wanted to touch base and say hi!

Before the run, I was able to talk with the other two people in my pace group who were there:

Kristina and Alisha, two of the other “Frank Sorter” pace group members (normally there will be 5-7 of us in the group). We’ll run the training runs together at a 10:30/mile pace- one minute slower than our “race pace” of 9:30/mile

It was a BEAUTIFUL, sunny and clear morning on the California coast. The sun was out and bathing the beach and boardwalk in its warm light. I was able to help the group by holding a “turn around” sign to tell people in the training program where to turn and jog back to the meeting place; a sign that elicited some very confused responses from the other people out enjoying the boardwalk that day.

AIDS FACT:
The number of U. S. teenagers infected with HIV doubles every 14 months-worldwide, half of all new infections occur in persons between the ages of 15 to 19 years old.

First Group Training Session!

This morning was the first of MANY weekly training sessions for the AIDS marathon training program! I woke up at 5:30am (it's saturday...uff), and drove to the meeting place at santa monica high school. This training session was an easy 3-mile jog to determine our pace groups. It was a overcast but beautiful mornign in santa monica and I really enjoyed meeting some of the other program participants and smelling the salty ocean air.

I've decided to keep this blog as a sort of training log as I embark on the exciting process of training for my first marathon. I plan to write in it weekly, after the group training session on saturdays and each entry will include a fact about HIV/AIDS (the cause i'm raisng money for), and my fundraising total to date!

AIDS FACT:
Approximately 700,000 to 900,000 Americans are currently infected with HIV. With 40,000 new infections each year, that is one new infection every 13 minutes.

FUNDRAISING TOTAL TO DATE:
$430 ($2570 still to raise- I need your help!)
