Dynamic Dozen

Today we ran 12 whole miles! We ran a completely different course than we have run before, we ran along Ocean Blvd. in Santa Monica and up through some of the neigborhoods around there, where there are some beautiful houses- but lots of HILLS! But we did it, and now we're only 14.2 miles away from the full distance of a marathon!

Terrific TEN!

This week was the milestone ten-mile run! I wasn't able to run with the group on saturday because I was scheduled to work for my internship. However, out group was schedued to bring after-the-run food, so I came out for the pre-run talk to drop off the food I brought. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood, perhaps a little daunted by double digit mileage.

The Pace Group:

Since I wasn't able to go on the 10 mile run with the group on saturday, I did the run on my own around USC today (Monday)! It was difficult to do the run listening only to the sound of my footsteps and making five laps around the perimiter of USC's campus, but the good feeling afterwards made it all worthwhile!

Me after 10 miles:

Great EIGHT!

The milage is really starting to accumulate now, today we ran 8 miles and got our first hill training. We ran a different route today too, usually we run towards venice along the boardwalk, but today we ran towards Santa Monica, past the pier, up the California incline and through neighborhoods. Coach Monica (our running instructor) taught us how to correctly run hills for distance running; shorten the stride and keep the body upright. It was fun to change the route, but with one major hill and lots of little hills, it felt like more than 8 miles.

Training is still going well though, I've been finding lots of new, fun, scenic routes to run during the week and it's a great time to just let the mind unwind after work.

AIDS Fact:
In 2002, 5 Million new people were infected with HIV/AIDS

Super Seven!

The milage is slowly building up, and we’re at seven miles! This week my pace group was bigger than usual; a few new people joined and almost everybody else from the original group was there, so we were quite the sizable mob running 10:30 miles for seven miles down the Santa Monica boardwalk. The run went really well, and we all finished in good spirits.

Brent, Rory, Alisha, Me, Seth (New Group member), and Philipe (also new)

After the run, Megan (another member of my pace group) had brought her friend Ted, who is a personal trainer, to come and evaluate our running form and give us tips and tricks on how to be more efficient, prevent injury and stretch properly- it was a fun and informative session that helped us all be more aware of how to make our bodies lean, mean, running machines!

After the run: Seth, Philipe, Rory, Me, Megan, Sally, and Brent

AIDS Fact:
In the United States, over 40,000 people are infected with HIV every year.

FUNDRAISING TOTAL TO DATE:
$490.00 ($2,510 still to raise)
Although some donations take a few weeks to process, so if you’ve already donated; thank you and your contribution will be counted shortly….

Six before the 4th!

Today was our six-mile run!

Surprisingly, almost the whole pace group (5 out of 8) was there despite the fact that it's almost the 4th of July. It was a cool and overcast morning in Santa Monica, perfect weather for the run. It's exciting to see our mileage building up, one mile at a time.

I find myself looking forward to the group runs more than any other event in my week. The program representatives and coaches make us aware of how much the money we're raising is helping people living with AIDS, for example APLA helps people with HIV/ AIDS get insurance, dental care, or find housing- activities that I had never considered that are made incredibly difficult following an AIDS diagnosis.

In addition, the people in my pace group are really fun, so the miles seem to fly by! In fact, I can see why people get addicted to running- I think I’m getting addicted myself!

The Running Group:

Brent, Megan, Me, Sally, and Camilla

AIDS Fact:
African American and Hispanic women together account for more than 77% of AIDS cases reported among women, yet represent less than one-fourth of the total female population in the U.S.

FUNDRAISING TOTAL TO DATE:
$470.00 ($2,530 still to raise)
